Our founders, Joan and Ahmad first visited Langkawi Island in the early 1970s when it was then rather unknown and undeveloped. Falling in love with the 10-million-year-old rainforest surroundings, they eventually embarked on the creation of Ambong Rainforest Retreat in 2011. With six studios and two cottages in the first phase, a second phase project was set in motion in 2016 which led to the launch of Ambong Pool Villas the following year. It became the first all-villa exclusive resort in Langkawi with nine villas, each with its own private pool and beautiful sea views.

Ambong–Ambong takes its name after a plant known locally as Merambong. The plant is often seen thriving on Langkawi’s rocky shores and sandy beaches. This particular plant holds all of the qualities to which Ambong–Ambong aspires, roots that give strength and structure to prevent erosion and provide a safe setting within which vibrant life can thrive and the Merambong flower itself has various uses in traditional medicinal healing reflecting the holistic wellness aspirations of Ambong-Ambong.
